RSO & RW Training Courses

SPSS is licensed by KACST to offer comprehensive training courses for both Radiation Safety Officers (RSO’s) and Radiation Workers (RWs). The content of the courses vary from basic radiation awareness session (as for RWs) to complex RSOs courses. Those courses would provide the candidate with the needed knowledge to work with and safely handle radioactive sources in the daily field work. Courses can be held at the SPSS location, or can be presented at the client’s site.

The RSOs courses (45h) will prepare the candidates for the KACST exam, and it will help to obtain the RSO license. Practical training sessions are included.

While the RWs short course (usually 24 hr) is a 3-day intensive short course that combines plenary lectures, tutorials and practical sessions to train the attendees in the important aspects of radiation safety in industry (like industrial radiography, nuclear gauges or x-ray technicians).

Other annual refresher courses can be offered to RWs as per the client needs.

Transporting Radioactive Material

Radioactive Packages contain variable quantities of radioactive material that are typically used in industrial facilities and in medicine. As example Oil & gas industry use radioactive sources such as industrial radiography sources in inspection, radioactive gauges (level gauges, thickness gauges, density gauges, alloy analyzer, Multi Phase Flow Meters (MPFMs)) and well logging sources in production and exploring.

The Import, Export, use, storage and monitoring of radiation sources are controlled in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia by Ministry of Interior (MOI) and KACST.  Transportation of such sources without necessary approval/permit from the authorities is serious offence and may be liable for penalties/sanctions as per the applicable rules. The national regulations prescribe limits and rules of radioactive packages that can be transported.

SPSS is licensed and equipped to conduct Radioactive Transportation Services in the Kingdom. RSO's, drivers & technicians are trained and qualified to fulfill the national regulation for the safe transport of radioactive material.

Leak Test & Wipe Sample Analysis

Routine (and per need) leak testing of a sealed radioactive source by means of wipe sample and radioactive measurement of the sample for every radioactive source is an international and the national requirements/rules of the Regulatory Authority of Saudi Arabia (King Abdulaziz City of Science and Technology-KACST).

The measurement shall advice the owner of the source and KACST if a sealed source wipe sample has contamination, which exceeds the leakage criterion 185 Bq.
Companies and facilities that use sealed radiation sources are required by law to perform leak tests in order to verify that the sources are not leaking radioactive material. This service is required as example for industrial radiography sources, nuclear gauges, and other devices containing radioactive sources.

SPSS is licensed to conduct leak testing services and offer clients a sealed source leak testing service for gamma, beta and alpha radioactive sources. We collect the wipe samples and measure the radioactivity of the sample then issue a leak test certificate for official use and record keeping.

Calibration of Survey Meters

We initiate a unique calibration service for your radiation alarm and survey meters. The calibration will be made at a national lab certified and approved by KACST. We look for this service to be more convenient, time saving & more efficient for our clients especially in Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.

The Calibration Process

  • Calibration is performed weekly.
  • Companies who wish to calibrate their survey meters through SPSS will submit them at our head office during the week.
  • SPSS will send the meters to the calibration lab in Riyadh every Saturday ONLY, and bring it back calibrated within 1-2 weeks.
  • Each survey meter will have a calibration certificate issued from the certified calibration lab.

Warning Signs & Placards

SPSS can help you customize radiation warning signs and placards for your storage bunkers and working areas. Simply inform of the required sizes and specifications of you desired item. Signs & placards can be either stickers or hard metallic (aluminum).

Warning signs & placards are required by King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) to be used around bunker and working ares as a safety measure to warn the public and surrounding people that may be close by in the area.

NORM Assessment & Training

Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) is available in the environment and varies with location. NORM may be found in oil, gas and water production facilities and accumulated during the drilling and processing of crude oil, natural gas and well waters inside pipes, around valves and inside tanks. Accumulated NORM may produce radioactive pipe scale (a residue left in pipes from drilling oil wells) and sludge that leave sites and equipment contaminated. Industrial waste like sludge and scales are samples of products might contain NORM.

The identification and quantification of NORM assists in radiological risk assessment, leading to the development of safe work practices. SPSS maintains in-house and field monitoring equipment to measure and assess NORM in the field and to analyze collected samples. SPSS also offers NORM training courses for workers in the field and interested individuals.

Radiation Survey

The Regulatory Authority in Saudi Arabia (King Abdulaziz City of Science and Technology-KACST) requires that radiation survey (routine and as need arises) to be performed to all types of Radiation sources present in the workplace and in the environment whether static or portable radiation gauges, X-ray cabinets, industrial radioactive sources, or unwanted contaminants from industrial processes to be closely monitored and identified on routine manner.

Also, Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia require that radiation shielding assessment and surveys to be performed around all areas using radioactive sources in medical facilities like: X- ray Rooms, CT Scanners Rooms, Dental X-ray Units, Panoramic X-ray Machines, and radio pharmaceuticals sources used in nuclear medicine.

The identification and quantification of a radiation hazard and shielding assessment is essential in the development of procedures to handle or contain the hazard. Information obtained can be used to compare with limits set by KACST and Ministry of health.

SPSS is well equipped to conduct radiation surveys in diverse situations around radiation sources in industry and hospital sources. A comprehensive report is issued after all surveys detailing measurements performed, results obtained and outlining recommendations.

Survey Meters, Area Monitors & TLD Supply

SPSS is a local agent of TRACERCO radiation survey meters. We also supply all other types of survey meters used in various areas of the industry. If the needed survey meter is not available locally SPSS can import it for you. We also supply area monitors with internal warning alarms frequently used in bunker areas, factories & around customs scanning devices found at various entry points in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In addition, we supply Electronic Personal Dosimeters (EPD) as well as pen dosimeters & thermo luminescent dosimeter (TLD) used by radiation safety officers and workers.

Hospital Radiation Safety

Most hospitals and clinics use equipment that contain radiation sources like Diagnostic X- Ray, CT Scanners, Dental X-ray, Panoramic X-ray and radiation therapy. The SPSS radiation protection service supports healthcare establishments in their use of ionizing radiation.

The services are varied in the form of calibration of radiation survey meters, room design, layout and shielding, and record keeping. Radiation survey for hospitals insures that each room containing an x-ray machine has an adequate shielding. In addition, it insures that the exposure levels for both the operator, and public, are lower than, or at least equal to the acceptable limits. In addition, the service includes training of medical staff (clinical technologists, medical students and practitioners) in theoretical and practical aspects of radiation protection.
